Blood Price (Victoria Nelson, #1)Blood Price by Tanya Huff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blood Price is the first book in a 5 book series featuring Vicki Nelson, an ex-cop turned P.I., suffering from a debilitating degenerative eye condition who stumbles upon torontos hidden supernatural underbelly.

Caught in the middle of a homicide investigation, she must work with Henry Fitzroy, illegitimate lovechild of Henry VIII, Vampire and writer of Bodice-rippers to unravel the mystery surrounding these supernatural deaths and put a stop to them…

This book introduces us to the cast and starts off some fantastic worldbuilding (this is the stuff that really makes or breaks an UF/PNR series for me, allowing that suspension of disbelief thats required to really sink into fantasy in an urban setting).

If the supernatural elements were removed, it would be a gripping murder mystery, the vamp and demon elements take it to a whole new level.

A great love triangle has its beginnings – its not trite like the current Sighlite type thats popping up everywhere. There is real, understandable struggle, and who she will end up with isnt clear at all.

This series also spawned a great wee TV show called Blood Ties, and that the author had a hand in adapting it and ensuring that whilst changed for tv was still true to its roots really shows.

At the time I read this I rated it 4 out of 5 stars, mostly because at the time I was a little put off by the romance element of it, but as i’ve read more and more in this genre, well, I understand just how subtle and frankly great it was.
